The Apple iPhone 11 utilizes an LCD panel in its design, which means that a high voltage backlight circuit is an integral part of the design to make image on the display visible. Damage to this circuit most often occurs during a screen replacement in which proper precautions are not
taken, particularly if the battery is left plugged in when the screen is removed or connected to the logic board of the device. There is a chance that if the battery is left plugged in, a resistor on the logic board will be damaged, causing the backlight circuit to malfunction.
To verify that the failure is likely the resistor mentioned previously, the battery is disconnected and diode-mode measurements are taken on pins 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, and 26 of the LCD FPC J8000. If pin 18 and 24 display no diode mode value, it is likely that the resistor failure is the
cause of backlight issues, these values should be between 400-500. To repair the circuit, an EMI shield must be removed from the logic board.
Removal of the shielding is accomplished with a hot air station to carefully melt the connections to the logic board. Extreme care must be taken so as to not disturb the many components and BGAs that can be found below this shield. With the shield removed, resistors R5651 and R5661 are visibly burned and will need to be replaced to restore backlight on the iPhone 11. These damaged resistors can be seen in red below.
The resistors are then replaced by our highly skilled technicians using the hot air station and soldering station. After replacement of these components, the diode mode measurements at pins 18 and 24 of J8000 are within normal ranges. The logic board is then fitted back into the iPhone 11 housing for testing. The device now powers on with image and backlight as expected.
