The SMB connection we see in this board is a barrel-type connector with a central pin. Often, barrel style connections like this will wear out over time from repeated use, even if they appear to be in almost perfect condition, which was true in this repair.

The SMB connection is a relatively straightforward port with four anchor points and a single “hot” connection in the center of the barrel. This connector is a right angle, surface mounted, through-hole connection to the motherboard. With this understanding of what port is necessary for this repair, our technicians were able to source the correct part in no time at all.

With the replacement port in stock, the old port is removed from the motherboard using the hot air station to melt the solder connections of the four-through hole anchor points. The center pin is likely heated for removal. With all five of the solder connections brought to a melted state, the
port is carefully pulled away from the motherboard.

To prepare the motherboard for the new port, any excess solder remaining in the “hot” pin and anchor point through holes is wicked away. The new port can then be positioned into place to verify proper fit to the motherboard. Solder is then added to each of the four anchor point holes and the center data line as well, completing the repair process.

With the new SMB connection installed, the device now functions reliably as expected.
